En las familias de las áreas rurales, la producción de aves con manejo convencional es una actividad económica importante. En Sololá, se realizó una investigación en la Universidad del Valle de Guatemala, Campus Altiplano, para comparar la crianza de gallos capones (Gallus gallus domesticus) frente al manejo convencional. El objetivo fue evaluar el crecimiento, peso y altura de ambos grupos bajo condiciones similares de alimentación y manejo. Se utilizó un diseño experimental al azar con dos tratamientos y siete repeticiones. Los resultados demostraron que el sistema de gallos capones es viable en la región, logrando un mayor crecimiento y peso en comparación con los gallos no castrados.

In families from rural areas of the country, one of the most important economic activities is poultry production using conventional management, providing both nutritional and economic support. In Sololá, there are individuals dedicated to raising roosters for fattening, mainly for certain departmental festivities. This situation led to conducting an evaluation of two types of management in rooster rearing: caponized rooster production (Gallus gallus domesticus) compared to conventional rooster production.
The research was carried out at the facilities of the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala, Altiplano Campus, specifically in the livestock area of the university. The main objective of the study was to compare conventional rooster production with caponized rooster production, using the same management practices and feeding.
For the caponized roosters, a castration methodology was used, which optimized the time required for production. This, in turn, generates higher income for producers and a positive impact on families or producers who wish to adopt this practice. In addition to presenting the differences between conventional rearing and caponized rooster production, this research aims for families as well as small and medium-scale poultry producers to become aware of this information so they can consult and apply it.
A completely randomized experimental design was used, with two treatments and seven repetitions. According to the results obtained, this system adapts very well to Sololá, as caponized (castrated) roosters showed greater growth and weight compared to non-castrated roosters.
