| spa |
| dc.description.abstract | Niche segregation explains the coexistence of ecologically similar species and the biophysical factors essential for their persistence. Despite their important ecological role and their limited and disturbed geographic distributions, motmots have been little studied under this framework. For this reason, this study evaluated the niche segregation and reproductive ecology of species of the family Momotidae in the seasonally dry forest of the Motagua Valley, Zacapa, Guatemala. A total of 15 effective sampling days were conducted between May and September 2025, accounting for 3,920 minutes of observation. Through fixed-radius point counts, vegetation characterization, butterfly capture, climatic and photographic records, and analyses using linear and generalized additive models, a clear ecological segregation among species was identified. Momotus lessonii was more abundant in denser and more mature forest areas (larger trunk diameters), whereas Eumomota superciliosa and M. mexicanus were more abundant in less dense and more open forests (areas with smaller trunk diameters). Moreover, these two species were associated with opposite climatic conditions: E. superciliosa was more abundant in relatively drier microclimates (lower dew point and higher atmospheric pressure), while M. mexicanus preferred relatively more humid microclimates (higher dew point and lower atmospheric pressure). Nesting events of M. mexicanus were recorded, as well as differences in reproductive phenology. The results confirm their coexistence through niche partitioning and temporal differences in reproduction. | eng |
