| spa |
| dc.description.abstract | Pinus maximinoi is a forest tree species of considerable economic, ecological, and cultural importance in Guatemala due to its rapid growth, adaptability, and widespread use in reforestation programs and timber production. However, limited information is available regarding its genetic diversity, posing challenges for its long-term management and conservation. This study aimed to characterize the genetic diversity of wild and managed populations of P. maximinoi in INAB Region VII, specifically in the departments of Huehuetenango and Quiché, using microsatellite molecular markers. Needle samples were collected from four populations, and three DNA extraction protocols were compared. The modified protocol developed by the UVG Plant Protection Laboratory was selected because it produced higher DNA concentrations and greater purity. Six functional microsatellite markers were used for the genetic analyses, and the resulting electropherograms were processed using R. The results revealed moderate genetic diversity (Na = 6.65, He = 0.785), accompanied by a deficit of heterozygotes and high fixation coefficients across populations, suggesting possible inbreeding or restricted gene flow. Genetic differentiation among populations was low to moderate (FST = 0.087–0.113), indicating overall genetic similarity. These findings highlight the importance of promoting habitat connectivity, implementing genetic management practices, and developing conservation strategies to prevent future genetic erosion in P. maximinoi populations. | eng |
