Incidencia de la intimidación y el maltrato entre iguales en estudiantes de secundaria de la ciudad de Guatemala

Abstract

El acoso escolar es la intimidación que se lleva a cabo entre niños y adolescentes y conlleva el maltrato físico, verbal, psicológico y emocional de la víctima. El victimario busca humillar a su víctima en público para ganar un lugar de “respeto” dentro de su círculo social. Esto casi siempre ocurre dentro de los centros educativos. El objetivo de este trabajo fue identificar la incidencia del maltrato entre iguales en estudiantes de secundaria, las formas en que se expresa y las diferencias respecto al grado, género y edad. Para ello se estudiaron 301 estudiantes de secundaria de tres instituciones educativas privadas de la ciudad de Guatemala comprendidos entre las edades de 12 a 19 años. El instrumento utilizado fue el CIMEI que consta de 30 preguntas que miden la incidencia de victimización e intimidación entre los alumnos. Los resultados de este trabajo evidenciaron que entre mayor edad tienen los estudiantes disminuyen las expresiones de intimidación o maltrato físicas y verbales. Con respecto al género encontramos que las estudiantes recurren más a expresiones verbales y de rechazo hacia sus iguales. Uno de los factores que muestra ser importante en los escenarios en los que se producen las intimidaciones es la ausencia de adultos. Los alumnos y alumnas tienden a buscar más a sus propios compañeros para compartir con ellos lo que les sucede que hacerlo con sus padres o maestros. En ocasiones, los agresores no reciben ningún tipo de reprimenda por parte de las autoridades y los agredidos afirman y justifican ser ellos quienes provocan a sus agresores para que se les maltrate o intimide. En conclusión este estudio reveló la necesidad de que los padres de familia y maestros se involucren más cuando ocurran situaciones de intimidación y promueva la comunicación para que los estudiantes puedan expresarse y reciban orientación en cuanto al manejo de estas situaciones.

School bullying is intimidation that occurs among children and adolescents and involves physical, verbal, psychological, and emotional abuse of the victim. The aggressor seeks to humiliate the victim in public in order to gain a position of “respect” within their social circle. This almost always occurs within educational institutions. The objective of this study was to identify the incidence of peer maltreatment among secondary school students, the ways in which it is expressed, and the differences according to grade level, gender, and age. For this purpose, 301 secondary school students from three private educational institutions in Guatemala City, aged between 12 and 19 years, were studied. The instrument used was the CIMEI, which consists of 30 questions that measure the incidence of victimization and intimidation among students.

The results of this study showed that as students grow older, expressions of intimidation or physical and verbal maltreatment decrease. Regarding gender, it was found that female students more frequently resort to verbal expressions and rejection toward their peers. One factor that appears to be important in situations where intimidation occurs is the absence of adults. Students tend to seek support from their peers to share what is happening to them rather than turning to their parents or teachers. In some cases, aggressors do not receive any type of reprimand from authorities, and victims claim and justify that they themselves provoke their aggressors to be mistreated or intimidated. In conclusion, this study revealed the need for parents and teachers to become more involved when situations of intimidation occur and to promote communication so that students can express themselves and receive guidance on how to manage these situations.
