| dc.description.abstract | Herpetofauna is a group used as an indicator of habitat quality due to its sensitivity to the environment and its microhabitat specificity. In this way, depending on the composition of the communities, the state of the habitat can be evaluated. Among the least biodiverse environments that exist are agricultural plantations due to different factors such as the use of chemicals and the conversion of land to monocultures. In this study, the richness and diversity of herpetofauna in a banana plantation located in Escuintla, Guatemala and the effect of vegetation cover on these same parameters were evaluated. Sampling was carried out using pitfall traps and transects in both types of plantations. Through field sampling, 18 species of herpetofauna were recorded, only 6 species were found in pitfall traps while 18 species were found with transects. The sampling method influenced the richness and abundance of amphibians and reptiles, while the presence of cover and temperature influenced the richness and abundance of amphibians. Vegetation cover and temperature had a negative effect on amphibian diversity and transects were more efficient for assessing amphibian and reptile diversity. Given what has been observed, vegetation cover with Epipremnum aureum is not enough to increase biodiversity using herpetofauna as an indicator group, so restoration of the existing riparian forest within the plantation is recommended as a much more efficient way to increase and host biodiversity and the ecosystem services it provides. | eng |
